A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has imposed a N3 million fine on the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to be paid as damages to Benita Ezumezu for failing to issue her passport within six weeks, as mandated by the Immigration Act 2015.

Emeka Nwite, the judge who presided over the case, ruled that the delay in issuing the passport violated the applicant’s rights to liberty and freedom of movement.

Benita Ezumezu applied for her passport in October 2022 and filed the case after waiting for months.

The court also has an order to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to produce Ezumezu’s passport within six weeks.
